Traveling with Baby
Traveling with a baby can be a daunting experience at first. You read all the travel advisory and parenting blogs and cross your fingers hoping you will be ready for your first flight with your baby. Now I think we were extremely blessed with the world's easiest baby to travel with, for the most part, he slept most of the flights we've been on! Here are a few things we've learned along the way.
TSA PRE-CHECK
This is a must-have essential, especially traveling with a baby. Now you will still need to take out any powder formula, milk, or any baby fluids (medicines, food, etc.) that is over the 4 oz. Typically the baby formula and any pre-made milk or breast milk will be pulled off the line and "tested". However, it usually goes fairly quickly and gives us enough time to get our car seat back together in its travel bag.
GATE CHECK
If you have to bring a car seat, stroller, or travel crib with you we highly encourage gate check. It might be a hassle to carry but it's well worth knowing they won't "lose" your luggage or have to wait at the bag check. Plus if your baby is fussy or your flight gets delayed or canceled you have easy access to go go go.
CARRY YOUR BABY
If your kiddo can't walk yet, strap them on in a non-metal baby carrier. It frees your hands and also you can go through TSA with them strapped on, making traveling more of a breeze.
PACK MEDICINES
You never know when your little one might catch a cold or get sick, especially traveling, pack individual serving-size medicines with these little bear bottles. It makes giving your kiddo medicine with ease and less mess!
NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES
We got these baby headphones for Lincoln and I'm not entirely sure how much it actually helped since Link seemed fairly well off without them, so I asked our pediatrician. He said it most likely does help reduce pressure in the ear and helps muffle the loud sounds of the airplane. I will say these worked like a charm for the first few months but by 7 months Link was pulling them off and didn't care much for them... it might be worth an investment for some baby headphones that play music at this point of our traveling journey.
BOTTLES FOR AIRPLANE
For littles giving them a bottle during take-off and landing help their little ears regulate. For older kiddos, you can try suckers, pacifiers, dummies, or even gum. We suggest at least two bottles (one for landing, one for taking off ), and if you're driving ways to your destination after traveling it's always good to have an extra!
DIAPERS & CHANGE OF CLOTHES
Always be prepared for the worst. It wasn't until these past two flights that Lincoln decided to become. wild man on the airplane. For the life of us, we couldn't figure out why he was acting like a wild child after months of flying like a perfect angel. Lo and behold Lincoln has a major blowout both times right when in-flight service was starting. We are so sorry to those around us for our stinky child! Those who have traveled know that airplane bathrooms aren't the largest and the changing table is about the size of a throw pillow!
